Nourish Doula Services

Nourish Doula Services

Each day thousands of women give birth alone.

Some of these women are in developing countries and do not have access to medical care and have an unassisted birth. Some of them are teenage moms. Some have made an adoption plan for their child. And some have husbands and boyfriends, but they are serving overseas and can't be there even though they desparately want to.

The Nourish Doula Services program provides women who would otherwise be without labor support with a birth partner -- at no cost to the mother-to-be. All Nourish Doula Services have completed DONA approved birth partner training and do not conduct medical interventions.

What's a doula?

From DONA International: "The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily." See "What is a doula?" for more information on doulas. (Link to: http://www.dona.org/mothers/index.php)

Nourish is seeking to develop doula programs in the DFW area, rural Illinois, and in developing nations. For more information e-mail angela@nourishcollective.org.

If you're a doula and want to volunteer or brainstorm about starting a volunteer doula program in your community e-mail angela@nourishcollective.org and let's talk!
